Morrison
has earned the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, that
of Eagle Scout. Only two percent of all Boy Scouts attain this
level.
Matthew
’s
Court of Honor ceremony was held on
June
3, 2006
at the
Colonial
Beach
Baptist
Church
.
He is a member of the Colonial Beach Boy Scout Troop 258 of the
Northern Neck District, Heart of Virginia Council. The
Colonial
Beach
Baptist
Church
,
of which
Matthew
is a member, sponsors both Boy Scout Troop 258 and Cub Scout
Pack 258.

. He also received certificates
from the United States Army, Youth Certificate of Recognition;
the Supreme Lodge Knights of Pythias Eagle Scout Award, with
Uniform Patch, and Personal letter from the Supreme Secretary.
Locally the National Society of the Sons of the American
Revolution, the James Monroe Chapter, presented a Certificate of
Eagle Scout Recognition and personal letter from
Doctor
William
Mason
McCarty
(Oldest living Eagle Scout in
the Northern Neck who obtained his Eagle Scout Rank in 1942).
The Northern Neck Lodge No. 2666 of the Benevolent and
Protective Order of Elks, Personal letter from the Exalted Ruler
Larry Crawford and Official Certificate; and the King George
County Public Schools, Doctor Candace F. Brown, Division
Superintendent, Personal letter of Congratulations.
For his
Eagle Scout community project,
Matthew
designed, developed, and
managed the creation of a Victorian garden at the Colonial Beach
Historical Society and Museum, which is located on
Washington Avenue
in
Colonial
Beach
.
Matthew
also organized and managed
fundraisers to secure funding for his project. The Colonial
Beach Historical Society and Museum rewarded
Matt
by presenting him with a Town
of
Colonial Beach Flag
.
Matt
began in Cub Scouts and moved
up through the ranks earning his Arrow of Light, and then
progressed through the scouting ranks by earning merit badges
and fulfilling Scouting requirements. He has earned 22 merit
badges and has held the positions of Assistant Patrol Leader,
Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol
Leader, Troop Guide and is a Brotherhood member of the Order of
the Arrow,
Nawakwa
Lodge
#3, a brotherhood of honored
campers that serves the Heart of Virginia Council.
While
Senior Patrol Leader of the troop in 2001, Matt’s leadership
enabled Troop 258 to earn the coveted “Commissioner’s Cup
for Outstanding Troop of the Year” for the Rappahannock and
Northern Neck District Boy Scouts at the Camporee held at Red
Oak Nursery demonstrating his leadership skills as more than
average.
Matt
has taken part in long-term
camping trips to BSA Camp T. Brady Saunders in Maidens,
Virginia
, and BSA Camp
Shenandoah in
Swoope
,
Virginia
. He has also participated in
many short-term Troop campouts to places such as Combined
Northern Neck and Rappahannock Camporees at Red Oak Nursery, the
Troop’s Annual Fear Fest Campout at
Paramount
's Kings Dominion Camp Grounds
and hiked portions of the
Appalachian Trail
while camped at the
Matthew
’s Arm area of the
Shenandoah
National Park
.
Matthew
is very active in school
activities. He has participated in KGHS Cross Country, KGHS
In-door track and Track & Field. This past spring
Matt
went on to the AA State Competition to participate in the In-door track
500-meter relay. He also participates in many other school
functions such as the Drama Club. Taking an active role in a few
of the
King
George
High School
productions from acting in them to behind the scenes by building the
sets. Matt was also the regional director for his regions
Octagon Club, a club dedicated to helping out the community and
providing for those in need.
Matt
is a senior at
King
George
High School
and will graduate June 2006. He
will be attending
Kutztown
University
in
Pennsylvania
majoring in Communications.
